Folks,

Considering all the chatter this amended ordinance has generated in the P.O. I thought I'd add this topic to my Blog. I welcome your comments.

Thanks for a new post!
I support amending it to allow sidewalk dining and alcohol consumption. It's silly not to allow a restaurant to have tables and serve outdoors.

Outdoor seating and alcohol will both help the downtown eateries, if they are willing to stay open beyond 5:00PM (but that's another battle....).

Me again,
A while back when I saw the Route 30 Movie at the Majestic in Gettysburg, John Putch told the crowd that "Mayor Pete in Chambersburg" wants to have a viewing there.

Any word on if the Capitol will be showing this funny movie? Tickets would make great holiday gifts.

Glad you asked about Rt. 30 John will be here on June 19th to show Rt.30 His movie will be the opening movie of what I hope will be a two day independent movie festival. I hope to formally announce the film festival next month. But whatever happens with the festival, Rt. 30 will be here on June 19th at 8:00 pm. However, I'm sorry but the Capitol won't have tickets printed before Christmas.

I overwhelming support the liquor control ordinance. Downtown Chambersburg needs all the help it can get and, as a young Chambersburg resident, myself and my friends would enjoy taking advantage of the opportunity to support local businesses and enjoy a glass of beer together.

Things are looking good downtown with the success of Cafe d'Italia and the soon-to-open Bistro... this amendment would just encourage that kind of responsible growth of independent business.

Thank you Mayor!

Mayor Pete,
Curious if you know anything about the railroad cars which have sitting on the tracks behind Wilson College lately.

I thought that line to the old Heinz plant was abandoned??

Anonymous,

There is a short line still operating that runs from Shippensburg back to the Borough and services the businesses around the Commerce Streeet Business Park. That's probably why there are railroad cars there.

I was just wondering what the status was on this ordinance; I think it could help breathe new life into the downtown, which has already markedly improved in the past year.

What new events/festivals are planned for the downtown this spring and summer? It's sometimes hard to find a clear list of upcoming festivals...

Anonymous,

The revised Liqiuor Control Ordinance was passed by Borough Council on November 17th.

You're right, with the opening of Bistro 71, Cafe D'Italia, and Food Palace there is a lot more going on downtown. This Spring and Summer should be great! Especially since Cafe D'Italia will be adding an outdoor eating area by early Spring.

That's great news on both counts Mayor; I'm looking forward to the warm weather and enjoying our town.

So what does the ordinance mean exactly? Will there be drink sales only during the street festivals? Will establishments like d'Italia be selling it?

Anonymous,

The Ordinance does two things:

1) It allows restaurants that want to extend their operations onto the sidewalk to serve liquor at theses "outdoor cafes". There are a few caveats, e.g. they must leave a 4 foot walkway for pedestrians and they must put up a three foot fence around the cafe.
2) It allows for outdoor consumption of alcohol at various public events. They key is that the event must get a "special Events permit" from the LCB, i.e. proceeds must be going to certain approved charities, the event must be authorized by the Borough Manager, and approved by the Police Chief and Mayor, the event must be separated from the general public and admission is restricted to those over 21.

Go to Chapter 254 of the Borough ordinances (Boro webpage) to see the actual wording of the new ordinances.
