I hope everyone has taken a deep breath and recovered from my comments about our favorite groundhog. If anyone wants to talk more about this subject I'm ready to listen. Mike Johnston, V.P. of Punxsutawney's Groundhog Club, got a kick out of the whole affair and agreed my comments were blown way out of proportion by the P.O. While he assured me it isn't necessary, he has graciously accepted my apology.

Nativity Scene on the Square

As many of you are aware Borough Council recently decided to require the creche be removed from the Fountain Square. While I didn't get to vote I support the Council's decision. Supreme Court decisions have made it clear that a religious display on public property is illegal unless it is part of a larger, non-religious presentation. In order to allow the creche to remain Council would have had to open the Fountain Square to the Pennsylvania Association of Non-Believers "Winter Solstice" sign as well as any other signs or displays that groups wanted to put up. As a result of Council's decision the creche was moved less than 100 feet to the front of Central Presbyterian Church and the Fountain Square was preserved as a memorial to those killed in our nation's wars.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

AMENDMENT TO LIQUOR CONTROL ORDINANCE

WOLFE LAKE

Regarding a recent blog about the area around what was once Wolfe Lake. Unfortunately, the Wolfe Lake Dam was removed a few years ago and Wolfe Lake is no more. I understand that about 10 years ago Dick Leisher, former President of the U..S Chamber of Commerce, had hoped to restore the Lake to it early 20th century glory but funding was not available and the idea fell through. For now there are no plans to improve or revitalize the area. However, as times change and the area available for development within the Borough shrinks, a developer with deep pockets might consider locating there. Be aware however, that the area is also in the floodplain and new construction could be significantly constrained.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Folks,

With Spring here and Summer coming up I thought Icould use the blog to notify you of some of the things happening in the Borough:

1. Cinco De Mayo - we will celebrate this holiday in two ways. There will be a festival at Southgate Shopping center on Saturday, May 3rd. It will run from approximately 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. There will be food, music (live bands and D.J.), and booths manned by local businesses. On Sunday, May 4th there will be a concert by the 55 person Carlisle Town Band at Memorial Park. It is free to the public and begins at 2:00 pm. It will feature a wide spectrum of Latin Music.

2. Cumberland Valley Film Club -- the CVFC was formed three months ago. It's goal is to provide quality foreign and independent movies to the people of our community. For now the CVFC will feature one showing a month, on the third Thursday of each month. The CVFC's first presentation was "Cinema Paradiso" on April 17th. Future showings are "Attonement" on May 15th and "La Vie En Rose" on June 19th. Membership in the CVFC is $20 per year and entitles you to discounted ticket prices and other goodies yet to be determined. Memorial Park

Memorial Park has been mentioned in several blogs so I thought I'd start a new posting under this heading.

Adam asked about having a summer music festival in Memorial Park. I think it would be a great idea and will be glad to work with Adam and recreation department Director, Herb Dolloway, to make it happen. I'm waiting to hear from Adam as to what specifically he has in mind.

Ryan asked about starting a flag football league and playing games at Memorial Park. This shouldn't be a problem and Ryan should call Herb Dolloway at 261-3275 to work out the details.

Recycling

For those of you who've asked about why the Borough doesn't recyle plastics, please note that at the Borough Council meeting last night an Ad Hoc Committee was established to look into this and other recycling issues. Councilman Tom Newcomer will be heading the Committeee. I suggest you contact him if you are interested in their activities.

Welcome to “Blog the Mayor”. The Blog is a first for both the Borough and the Mayor so bear with us as we launch what we hope will be an interesting, informative, and productive conversation. One thing I want to remind everyone is that the Borough is fortunate to have ten dedicated Council persons who also want to hear from you if you have questions or problems with Borough services in their ward. Don’t be afraid to contact them. I hope you have a chance to come downtown and participate in IceFest, January 31 –February 2. There will be all sorts of activities going on. I’ll be judging the chilli cookoff on Saturday morning, February 2nd . Also on Saturday morning a Boy Scout troop from Alaska will run a dogsled through downtown, re-creating the famous 1925 serum run in which diphtheria anti-toxin was transported from Anchorage to Nome.
